Lucknow Metro opened on September 5, 2017 (inaugurated by PM Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath). Phase 1A Priority Section (Transport Nagar to Charbagh, 8.5 km) opened first. Full Red Line (CCS Airport to Munshi Pulia) opened March 8, 2019. It was the fastest-built metro in India — Phase 1A completed in just 2 years 9 months. Original operator Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) was renamed UPMRC (Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation). Trains are Alstom Metropolis 4-coach sets (AC, max 90 km/h).
Lucknow Metro has 4 underground stations on the Red Line: CCS International Airport (terminal), Hussainganj, Sachivalaya, and Hazratganj. These stations are located in the city's heritage core where underground construction was preferred to preserve the above-ground character. All 4 have deep escalators, lifts, good lighting, and are well air-conditioned. The remaining 17 stations are elevated.
Two main options: (1) Token — buy at any station's Token Vending Machine (TVM) or ticket counter. Pay by cash, UPI, or card. Get a QR code token. Tap at entry and exit gates. (2) GoSmart Card — buy at ticket counter (₹200 initial load). Recharge at Add Value Machines (AVM), UPMRC website, or Lucknow Metro app. Tap-and-go — faster than tokens. From Charbagh: 7 stops south, ~14 min, ₹30.
